Welcome, busybees.
Apple asked a federal judge for a preliminary injunction against OpenAI today, trying to stop OpenAI and two former Apple employees now working there, from touching, using, or disclosing anything that looks like Apple’s confidential information.
OpenAI fired back within hours, calling the motion “based on false information and completely unnecessary.” The AI talent war between the two companies just moved from LinkedIn into the courtroom.
Meanwhile, Texas, the busiest data-center growth market in the country, just froze new grid approvals pending an audit, and CrowdStrike’s newest threat report shows attackers weaponizing AI to hit trusted software packages faster than ever. If you’re hiring, building, or funding in AI right now, all three of these change your calculus. Here’s everything that moved today, plus real roles that went live recently.
Here’s what happened in AI today:
Apple seeks an injunction to keep OpenAI away from its trade secrets.
Texas freezes new AI data-center grid approvals pending a full audit.
CrowdStrike says attackers are now weaponizing AI to hit trusted software packages within hours of a flaw going public.
A UK photonic-chip startup just raised $312M at a $3.3B valuation.
US computer science enrollment is falling even as everyone else rushes into AI classes.
…and a whole lot more that you can read about below.
Apple wants a judge to keep OpenAI out of its trade secrets
Apple filed for a preliminary injunction against OpenAI and two former Apple employees, Chang Liu and Tang Yew Tan who now work there, seeking to bar them from accessing, using, or disclosing anything tied to Apple’s confidential information, plus depositions from OpenAI and its hardware arm, io Products. OpenAI responded the same night, denying it has or wants any of Apple’s trade secrets.
Texas just hit pause on new AI data centers
Governor Greg Abbott ordered the state’s Public Utility Commission and ERCOT to audit every proposed data center for its tax breaks, power and water use, and community impact before granting any new grid connection. ERCOT is tracking more than 1,800 projects in its interconnection queue, roughly 90% of them data centers, representing over five times the grid’s current peak demand.
AI has become the attacker’s biggest speed advantage too
CrowdStrike’s 2026 Threat Hunting Report, released August 3, found China-linked groups now exploiting newly disclosed vulnerabilities within 24 hours, and a North Korean operator (STARDUST CHOLLIMA) injecting malicious code into 131 trusted AI-framework packages. In one incident, attackers fired nearly 200,000 AI model requests in just two minutes.

Quick AI Hits
The AI-versus-open-weight fight gets personal. Palantir CEO Alex Karp told CNBC that frontier labs like OpenAI and Anthropic are trying to “drug addict” enterprises into dependence, arguing companies should keep their IP behind the firewall with open-weight alternatives instead.
College kids are skipping computer science, and everyone else is rushing in. US computer and information sciences enrollment fell more than 8% at four-year colleges this year, even as schools compress course approval from 18 months to weeks to launch AI minors for psychology, music, and neuroscience majors.
Snap’s ad business gets an AI lift. Snap reported Q2 revenue up 19% to $1.60 billion, crediting its AI-powered ad automation tool, Smart Campaigns, with a 56% platform-wide conversion lift.
One engineer, one week, a whole open-source Office suite. Genspark open-sourced GenOffice, an AI-native word processor, spreadsheet, and presentation suite for Mac and Windows, built by a single engineer in one week for about $10,000 in AI compute, aimed squarely at Google Docs and Microsoft 365 Copilot.
State attorneys general want answers from OpenAI. Fifteen Republican state AGs sent OpenAI a letter demanding it preserve all records from July’s incident, where a test AI agent broke out of its sandbox and took over 17,600 actions against Hugging Face’s production systems.
A rough month for a AI-heavy hedge fund. Bloomberg reports Izzy Englander’s $92 billion Millennium Management lost 2.1% in July as an AI-stock selloff hit its equity trading pods, part of a broader unwind that forced other funds to sell billions in tech shares to meet margin calls.
A new video model won’t ship in the US. MiniMax released its H3 video-generation weights with a license that explicitly excludes the US, UK, EU, and South Korea, citing evolving regulation in those regions.
Today’s Money Moves 💸
OLIX Raises $312 Million Series B
London-based photonic-chip startup OLIX (formerly Flux Computing) closed a $312 million Series B at a $3.3 billion valuation, more than triple where it stood in February. The round was led by Fundomo, with Arm, Hudson River Trading, and Netflix co-founder Reed Hastings also participating. OLIX builds Optical Tensor Processing Units, full silicon-to-software hardware aimed at making frontier AI inference dramatically faster using light instead of pure electronics.
Intelligence Raises $7.9 Million Seed at $60 Million ARR
Intelligence, the startup behind AI design-evaluation platform DesignArena, raised a $7.9 million seed led by Index Ventures, with Conviction, A*, and Valkyrie also joining. The platform already draws 5.3 million users voting on head-to-head comparisons of AI-generated designs, and sells that human feedback data back to frontier labs, a small round attached to an unusually large $60 million in annual revenue already in hand.
Prompt of the Day
The “Meeting to Action” Prompt
Use this right after any call, standup, or client meeting, paste in your raw notes or transcript and get something you can actually act on, instead of a wall of text you’ll never re-read.
System Role: An efficient executive assistant who hates vague action items.
Objective: Turn messy meeting notes into clear owners, decisions, and next steps.
Constraints: Every action item must have a named owner and a deadline, even if you have to flag it as “TBD confirm with team.” No generic summaries, only decisions and actions that were actually discussed.
Format:
Decisions Made: What was actually agreed, in plain language.
Action Items: Owner → Task → Deadline, one line each.
Open Questions: Anything left unresolved that needs a follow-up.
